“How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?” ”Your servant has nothing there at all”, she said,”except a little oil.”

2 Kings 4:1-7

In our everyday life, when confronted with problems, we tend to think about what we don’t have instead of what we have. Those little things are often forgotten, since we think they have no value.

Just like the widow who went to see Elisha about her late husband’s debts, to her the little oil had no value compared to her debt.

She didn’t think that the jar of oil she had was wealth. Do you know what Elisha told her to do? Just borrow many empty containers from neighbors, lock yourself and your sons in your house and pour out the little oil you have in all containers? (2Kings 4:3-4)

This seems crazy, but that’s what God wants from each one of us. Did you notice that the widow didn’t protest when she received the crazy advice? She just went and did as she was told! What a great faith she had in the word of the man of God! She trusted him. Believed that what she was told came from God. Had it been me, I doubt that I would have followed the advice without protest. I would have reacted like Naaman, when he was told to immerse himself 7 times in the Jordan river in order to be healed from leprosy. And why do you think she was told to lock herself with her sons in the house? The man of God was well aware that discouraging voices could come from everywhere had she done it in the public. You don’t need people’s view to perform what God asks you to do. Those friends of yours, neighbors, brothers and sisters in Christ may hinder you from obeying God. In many cases, you need to execute what God told you without consulting your friends.

Several times, God asks us to use those little things we have in our possessions with faith. Those things you have you don’t value. That little faith you have, those talents you use as a hobby … Do you know that your communication skills you use in your group of friends could be used in a more important place? Do you know that the revelations you share in a small group during devotion could be used in a more important group or even church? What about that creativity you have in you, your drawing skills, your green hand, and your amazing taste for decoration … Do you know that it could become a means to survive?

Stop crying and worrying about your problems, you are wealthy. Stop being self-centered. What you have in you is more precious and valuable than gold and silver! And on top of that, you have a great God. Who is able to do the impossible. Who is ready to help you use that little you have. A God who has no limits. Who works in the dimension of infinity. Just trust Him and present to Him those things you have in you and He will reveal to you the way you will use them to get out of that problem.

Let our prayer today be to ask God reveal to us the valuable things He has given to us, trust in Him, believe in His unlimited power and put all our possessions and resources at His service. He will just know what to do with them!
